Windows Hello for Business isn't being set up

Users are never prompted to set up a PIN or face sign-in, or setup fails partway through.

What you’re seeing

  • Users never see a prompt to create a PIN or set up face or fingerprint sign-in after signing in.
  • Setup starts but fails with a message along the lines of "Something went wrong" or that the PIN could not be set up.
  • Sign-in options show Windows Hello as unavailable or managed by the organization.
  • PIN sign-in works on the device but fails when reaching on-premises file shares or apps.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • The Windows Hello for Business policy is not assigned, is disabled, or conflicts between Intune and Group Policy.
  • The device is not Entra joined or hybrid joined correctly, which Windows Hello for Business requires.
  • The TPM is missing, disabled or in a state that cannot create the required keys.
  • Multifactor authentication cannot be completed during setup, so key provisioning stops partway.
  • In hybrid environments, the trust model, such as cloud Kerberos trust, is not set up, so on-premises resources reject the sign-in.
  • Biometric cameras or fingerprint readers lack compatible drivers.

Why it matters

Windows Hello for Business is one of the strongest defenses against stolen passwords, because the credential is bound to the device and cannot be phished. When rollout fails, staff keep typing passwords that can be captured by fake login pages, and the business misses out on a security improvement it may already be paying for. Partial deployments also create confusing sign-in experiences that generate help requests and push users to disable features meant to protect them.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is a PIN really more secure than a password?

Yes, in this setup. A Windows Hello PIN unlocks a key stored in the device's security chip, so it is useless to an attacker who does not also have that specific computer.

Will users lose access to anything while this is fixed?

No. Users can keep signing in with their passwords while we resolve the setup problem, then enroll in Windows Hello once it works.
