Autopilot stuck on the Enrollment Status Page or times out

A new PC set up with Autopilot hangs on 'Setting up your device' or the account setup screen, then times out with an error.

What you’re seeing

  • A new PC sits on "Setting up your device" or "Setting up for work" for an hour or more.
  • The Account setup phase stays at "Identifying" or "Working on it" without progressing.
  • Setup ends with a timeout message stating that it took longer than expected, sometimes with an error code.
  • Some laptops in the same batch finish fine while others hang at the same step.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • An app marked as required during setup is failing to install or is too large to finish within the time limit.
  • A mix of Win32 and Microsoft Store or MSI-based app deployments conflicts during setup, stalling the installer.
  • A configuration profile, such as a security baseline or certificate profile, fails to apply and blocks completion.
  • A required app or policy is targeted at a user group in a way the device cannot process before sign-in.
  • Network restrictions, a proxy or a firewall block the Microsoft endpoints the device must reach during setup.
  • In hybrid deployments, the device cannot contact a domain controller or the hybrid join takes too long to sync.

Why it matters

Autopilot is meant to let a new hire unbox a laptop and start working, so a stuck setup screen undoes the whole point. The employee sits idle on their first day, IT has to step in, and the machine may end up only partly configured with missing security software or apps. When the same issue affects a batch of devices, a hardware refresh or onboarding wave can slip by days while everyone waits for the cause to be found.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Can the user skip setup and fix things later?

Some settings allow it, but a device that bypasses setup may be missing required security tools or policies. We prefer to find what is blocking setup so every device finishes in a known, protected state.

Is the new laptop faulty?

Almost never. Stuck Autopilot setups are usually caused by an app, policy or network rule in the tenant, which is why the same problem often affects several devices at once.
