Intune & Device Management

Intune app shows "install failed" (0x87D1041C) even though it installed

0x87D1041C

An app deployed from Intune actually installs, but Intune reports it as failed because its detection rule doesn't find it.

What you’re seeing

  • The Intune portal lists the app as "Failed" with error 0x87D1041C on devices where it is clearly installed.
  • Users open and use the application normally, yet Company Portal shows an install error.
  • Intune keeps retrying the install on a schedule, sometimes reinstalling the app or popping up notifications.
  • Apps that depend on this one never deploy, because Intune believes the first app is missing.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • The detection rule looks for a file, folder or registry location that the installer does not actually create.
  • The detection rule checks for a specific version number, but the installer put down a newer or slightly different version.
  • The app installs per user, while the detection rule checks a machine-wide location, or the other way around.
  • The app updates itself after installation, so the version the rule expects no longer exists.
  • A 32-bit versus 64-bit path difference means the rule is looking in the wrong Program Files or registry view.

Why it matters

False failures make Intune reporting unreliable. IT can no longer tell which devices genuinely lack an app, compliance and audit reports overstate problems, and real failures get lost among phantom ones. Repeated reinstall attempts can interrupt users, reset application settings or consume bandwidth, and apps configured as dependencies or supersedence chains stall behind the one that is wrongly reported as missing.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

If the app is working, does this error actually matter?

Yes. Intune will keep trying to reinstall it, dependent apps will not deploy, and your reports will show failures that hide genuine problems on other devices.

Do users need to do anything?

No. This is corrected in how the app is defined in Intune, so the fix happens centrally and devices report the correct status at their next check-in.
