Intune & Device Management

Hybrid join stuck in 'Pending' in Entra ID

Domain-joined computers show as 'Pending' in Entra ID and never finish registering, so device-based access policies don't work.

What you’re seeing

  • Computers show "Pending" in the registered column of the Entra ID devices list.
  • Conditional Access policies that require a hybrid joined device block users on domain-joined PCs.
  • Device status reports on the PC show it is domain joined but not Azure AD or Entra joined.
  • Single sign-on to Microsoft 365 apps prompts for credentials more often than expected.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • Entra Connect synced the computer object, but the device itself has never completed its registration step with Entra ID.
  • The service connection point in Active Directory is missing or points to the wrong tenant.
  • The computers' organizational unit is not included in Entra Connect's sync scope.
  • A proxy or firewall blocks the Microsoft registration endpoints the device must reach as the system account.
  • The device cannot reach a domain controller when the registration task runs, such as on remote laptops off the VPN.
  • Federation or device writeback settings are inconsistent after a migration from AD FS to cloud authentication.

Why it matters

Hybrid join is what lets Conditional Access trust domain computers. When devices stay pending, the business is forced to choose between blocking legitimate users and weakening policies so they can work. Device-based controls like requiring a managed computer for SharePoint or blocking downloads on unmanaged ones stop working as intended, and the move to Intune co-management or cloud-native management stalls until registration is sorted out.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Does every computer need to be on the office network for this to work?

Registration needs the device to reach a domain controller at least once at the right time, which is why remote laptops often get stuck. We confirm how your devices connect and plan around it.

Will this affect users' ability to sign in to Windows?

No. Users continue signing in to their domain accounts as normal. Hybrid join affects how Microsoft 365 and Entra ID recognize the device, not the Windows sign-in itself.
