What you’re seeing
- Failover Cluster Manager shows a CSV in Redirected Access or Offline status.
- Cluster events reporting that a CSV moved to a paused or redirected state.
- VMs on the affected volume become sluggish, unresponsive or enter a paused state.
- Live migrations fail, or VMs fail over unexpectedly between nodes.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- One cluster node lost its iSCSI, Fibre Channel or SAS storage path, so its I/O is redirected over the network through the coordinator node.
- A backup product placed the CSV in redirected mode during a snapshot and didn't release it.
- Antivirus or other filter drivers on a node aren't compatible with direct CSV access.
- Multipath settings or storage firmware are misconfigured, causing paths to drop intermittently.
- The cluster network carrying CSV traffic is congested or misconfigured, causing timeouts.
Why it matters
A clustered Hyper-V environment exists to keep servers running through failures, but a redirected or offline CSV undercuts that promise. Redirected I/O sends storage traffic over the network, slowing every VM on the volume; an offline CSV stops them entirely. Because many VMs usually share one CSV, a single storage issue can take out domain controllers, databases and file servers at the same moment. Forcing the volume online without understanding the storage path risks corruption.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
Is our data at risk?
Redirected access is a protective mode designed to keep data consistent while a node has a storage problem. An offline volume is more serious, and we confirm storage health before bringing anything back.
Do all the cluster nodes need to be restarted?
Usually not. The issue is often limited to one node's storage connection or a backup process, and it can be resolved without restarting the whole cluster.
