Hyper-V & VMware

Hyper-V checkpoint is stuck or won't merge

A VM has old checkpoints that won't delete or merge, and its disk files keep growing.

What you’re seeing

  • Old checkpoints in Hyper-V Manager that can't be deleted, or that disappear but leave AVHDX files behind.
  • A merge that sits at the same percentage for hours, or a merge-in-progress status that never ends.
  • AVHDX files that keep growing and eating up free space on the host volume.
  • Backups failing or running longer because of the existing checkpoint chain.
  • The server inside the VM getting slower as more data is written to differencing disks.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • A backup application created a recovery checkpoint and failed before cleaning it up.
  • The host volume is too low on free space to complete the merge.
  • The VM's configuration and the actual chain of AVHDX files no longer match, so Hyper-V can't locate the correct parent disk.
  • Antivirus scanning or other file locks on the VM folder are preventing the merge from finishing.
  • Checkpoints were deleted while the VM was powered off, and the deferred merge never ran.

Why it matters

Lingering checkpoints quietly fill the host's storage, and if the volume runs out of space, every VM on it can pause. A long checkpoint chain also slows disk performance for the server inside the VM and complicates backups and restores. The biggest danger lies in the cleanup: deleting the wrong AVHDX file or merging in the wrong order can discard days or weeks of data that exists only in the differencing disk. This is a problem where a hasty fix carries more risk than the symptom itself.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Can we just delete the AVHDX files to free up space?

No. Those files often hold every change made since the checkpoint was created, sometimes weeks of data. Removing them can roll the server back in time or leave it unbootable.

Does the VM need to be shut down to merge?

Hyper-V can merge many checkpoints while the VM runs, but some broken chains need a maintenance window. We confirm which applies before changing anything.

Why did this happen in the first place?

Most often a backup job failed partway through and left its checkpoint behind. Part of the work is finding out why, so it doesn't recur.
