ESXi host disconnected or not responding in vCenter

A host shows as disconnected or not responding in vCenter, even though the VMs on it may still be running.

What you’re seeing

  • A host in vCenter shows '(not responding)' or '(disconnected)', with its VMs greyed out or marked orphaned.
  • Users can still reach the VMs on that host, but you can't manage, migrate or back them up.
  • Reconnect attempts fail with timeout, authentication or SSL errors.
  • Alarms about lost heartbeats, HA agent errors or lost connectivity on the management network.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • The management agents on the ESXi host stopped responding, often because of a full log partition or memory pressure on the host.
  • A network, VLAN or firewall change is blocking communication between vCenter and the host's management interface.
  • DNS resolution between vCenter and the host broke, or the host was renamed or re-addressed.
  • The host's certificate, or the credentials vCenter stores for the host, are no longer valid.
  • A hardware fault, lost storage paths or a purple diagnostic screen took the host down.

Why it matters

Even if the VMs keep running, a disconnected host leaves them unmanaged: backups that depend on vCenter fail, HA may not protect them, and you can't migrate them off if the hardware starts to fail. If the host really is down, every VM on it may be offline, taking business services with it. Hasty troubleshooting, such as restarting the host or its agents at the wrong moment, can drop running workloads. Understanding which situation you are in is the first priority.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Are the virtual machines on the host still running?

Often they are, because a lost management connection doesn't stop the VMs themselves. We confirm their state before taking any action that might affect them.

Do we need to reboot the host?

Not usually. Many disconnections come from management agents or networking and can be resolved without a reboot. If one is needed, we plan around the running VMs.

Is this related to our VMware license?

Rarely. License problems produce different warnings; the usual culprits are networking, agents, certificates or host health.
