VMware says 'virtual machine disks consolidation is needed'

vSphere warns that a VM's disks need consolidation, often after a backup left snapshot files behind.

What you’re seeing

  • A yellow warning in the vSphere Client saying 'Virtual machine disks consolidation is needed'.
  • Snapshot Manager lists no snapshots, yet the VM's datastore folder contains delta or -00000x.vmdk files.
  • Consolidation attempts fail with an error about a locked file or being unable to access a file.
  • The datastore holding the VM is filling up faster than expected.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • A backup product took a snapshot for its job and failed to remove it cleanly afterward.
  • A backup proxy still has the VM's disk attached through hot-add, holding a lock on the snapshot files.
  • Snapshot removal timed out under heavy I/O, leaving delta disks out of sync with the snapshot records.
  • The datastore was too full to complete the previous consolidation.
  • Files were copied or moved by hand, so the VM's descriptor files and actual disk chain no longer agree.

Why it matters

A VM running on orphaned delta disks writes every change to files that keep growing, which slowly fills the datastore and degrades performance. If the datastore runs out of space, the VM and its neighbors can freeze. Backups may also fail or capture inconsistent data while the chain is broken. Incorrect cleanup, such as deleting delta files, can discard recent changes or corrupt the disk, so a careful approach protects the business data on that VM.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to keep running the VM in this state?

It will keep running for a while, but the delta files grow every day and the risk of a full datastore rises. It is best addressed promptly rather than left alone.

Will consolidation cause downtime?

Consolidation normally runs while the VM is online, though performance may dip briefly. Locked files sometimes require a short maintenance window, which we arrange with you.
