Accounts, Logins & Remote Access

'The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed'

A domain-joined PC refuses domain logins with a trust relationship error — common after restoring from a snapshot or after the machine was offline for a long time.

What you’re seeing

  • Logon fails with "The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed."
  • Only domain accounts are refused; a local account on the same PC still logs in.
  • The error appeared right after reverting a virtual machine to a snapshot or restoring a backup.
  • A laptop that was in a drawer for months will not accept the user's domain logon.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • The computer's machine account password no longer matches the one stored in Active Directory.
  • A snapshot or image restore rolled the PC back to an older machine password the domain has already replaced.
  • The computer object was deleted, disabled or reset in Active Directory.
  • Two machines were cloned from one image without being prepared, so they share an identity.
  • Clock drift or replication problems on domain controllers prevented the secure channel from being refreshed.

Why it matters

A broken trust locks the user out of their own PC and anything that relies on domain sign-in, including mapped drives, printers and line-of-business apps. On servers, the same error can stop services that authenticate to the domain. If many machines were restored from snapshots at once, a whole office can be locked out simultaneously.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Will the user lose their files or profile?

Normally no. Re-establishing trust keeps the local profile and data intact; we confirm the user's files are where expected before and after.

Why does this keep happening to our virtual machines?

Reverting to old snapshots is the usual trigger. We can explain how to manage snapshots so domain-joined machines stay in sync.
