Accounts, Logins & Remote Access

New group membership doesn't take effect for the user

You add someone to a security group, but they still get access denied to the share, database or app. Nothing seems wrong with the group.

What you’re seeing

  • A user was added to the right security group but still gets access denied on the shared folder.
  • Colleagues in the same group can open the database or application; the new member cannot.
  • Access starts working for the user the next morning without anyone changing anything.
  • The group shows the user as a member in Active Directory, yet the user's PC reports otherwise.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • Group memberships are read into the user's Kerberos ticket at logon, so the existing session still carries the old list.
  • The change was made on one domain controller and has not replicated to the controller the user authenticates against.
  • The user is in a nested group that is not included where the permission was granted, or the nesting type is not supported.
  • The application or file server caches tokens or permissions independently and has not refreshed.
  • Access is actually being blocked by a deny entry or a share-level permission separate from the group's NTFS rights.

Why it matters

Delayed access slows onboarding and role changes. New staff sit idle waiting for files or systems, managers lose confidence in IT, and the temptation grows to grant rights directly to individuals, which makes future audits and offboarding much harder. In regulated businesses, untidy direct permissions are a common audit finding.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Did we add them to the wrong group?

Possibly, but more often the group is right and the user's session or replication simply has not caught up. We confirm which it is before changing permissions.

Will other new hires run into the same delay?

If the cause is replication or nesting, yes. Fixing the underlying issue makes future group changes take effect predictably.
