Accounts, Logins & Remote Access

Remote Desktop says you're not authorized for remote login

An account that should have access gets told it isn't authorized for remote login when connecting with Remote Desktop, even after being added to the right group.

What you’re seeing

  • A message that the connection was denied because the user account is not authorized for remote login.
  • Administrators can connect but standard users cannot, even after being added to Remote Desktop Users.
  • The same account logs on fine at the physical keyboard of the machine.
  • Access worked until a Group Policy or security baseline was applied.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • The user or group lacks the user right that permits logon through Remote Desktop Services on that machine.
  • A Group Policy explicitly denies remote logon to a group the user belongs to, and deny rules override allow rules.
  • A domain policy overwrote the local Remote Desktop Users group membership with its own list.
  • The user's group change has not yet applied because policy or token refresh has not happened on the target computer.
  • On a session host, the user is not included in the collection or application group that grants access.

Why it matters

Remote Desktop is how many businesses reach accounting systems, line-of-business apps and office PCs from home. When authorized staff are refused, they cannot work remotely at all, and the usual quick workaround of making them administrators gives every remote user far more power than they need, a significant security risk if any one account is compromised.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is making the user a local admin a safe shortcut?

No. It works only because admins bypass the restriction, and it gives the account full control of the machine. We grant the specific right needed instead.

Why did this start after a security update or baseline?

Security baselines often tighten remote logon rights. That is reasonable, but it needs to be aligned with who in your business actually requires remote access.
