Microsoft 365 & OneDrive

Restore a deleted Microsoft 365 user and mailbox

A user account was deleted — by mistake or during offboarding — and their mailbox, OneDrive files or Teams data are now needed back.

What you’re seeing

  • A former employee's mailbox, OneDrive files or Teams chats are suddenly needed for a client, legal or payroll matter.
  • The account no longer appears in the active users list in the admin center.
  • Email sent to the person's old address bounces.
  • A manager discovers that key project files lived in the departed employee's OneDrive.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • The account was deleted during offboarding before the mailbox and files were handed to someone else.
  • Deleted users remain recoverable for about 30 days, after which their mailbox and OneDrive are permanently removed unless a retention policy keeps them.
  • A synced account was removed from on-premises Active Directory or moved out of sync scope, which deleted the cloud account automatically.
  • A new account was created with the same name or email address, which conflicts with restoring the original.
  • No retention policy or litigation hold was in place, so data past the recovery window can't be recovered from Microsoft 365 itself.

Why it matters

Departed employees often hold the only copy of client correspondence, contracts, project files and approvals. Losing that history can stall active deals, weaken your position in a dispute and violate record-keeping obligations in regulated industries. The recovery window is limited, so delays can turn a straightforward restore into permanent loss. A careful restore also has to avoid reactivating access for someone who shouldn't have it.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

How long do we have to get the account back?

Deleted Microsoft 365 users can generally be restored for about 30 days. After that, recovery depends on whether a retention policy or backup was in place, so it's best to act quickly.

Will the former employee be able to sign in again?

Not unless you want them to. We confirm the plan with you before restoring, and the account can be secured so only the people who need the data can reach it.

Does a restored account need a license?

Usually it does for the mailbox to stay fully active, though there are lower-cost options for keeping the data accessible. We explain the choices in plain English.
