What you’re seeing
- Files and folders show a red circle with a white X instead of a green check mark or blue cloud.
- The OneDrive icon in the taskbar shows a red X or a sync error notice.
- Desktop shortcuts and documents display the red X after OneDrive took over the Desktop folder.
- Changes made on one computer don't appear on other devices or in the browser.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- A file name contains characters, or a path is longer than OneDrive and SharePoint allow.
- A file is open or locked by another program, so OneDrive can't upload the latest version.
- The OneDrive account is signed out, the password changed, or the license was removed.
- The OneDrive storage quota is full, so new and changed files can't be uploaded.
- Certain file types, such as application shortcuts or temporary files, aren't supported for sync in the location they're stored.
Why it matters
A red X means the copy in the cloud no longer matches the one on the computer. If the laptop is lost, stolen or fails, recent work that never synced is gone, even though the user believed it was backed up. Colleagues working from shared libraries may be editing outdated versions, causing conflicts and duplicate files. Because the icons are easy to overlook, sync problems can quietly persist for weeks.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
Are files with a red X backed up?
Not the latest version. The red X means that file or folder hasn't synced, so recent changes exist only on that computer until the issue is resolved.
Will fixing sync overwrite anyone's work?
We identify which files are affected and why before changing anything, so conflicting versions are kept rather than overwritten.
