'Password does not meet the password policy requirements' with a strong password

Setting a new password fails with a policy error even though it looks complex enough. Minimum password age, password history or a separate policy is blocking it.

What you’re seeing

  • Changing a password fails with a message that it does not meet the password policy requirements.
  • The rejected password is long, complex and clearly stronger than what the policy asks for.
  • The error appears when the user tries to change a password they set only a day ago.
  • Admins can reset the password, but the user cannot change it themselves.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • A minimum password age requires the current password to be kept for a number of days before it can be changed again.
  • The new password matches one of the passwords remembered in the password history.
  • A fine-grained password policy applies to this user with stricter rules than the default domain policy.
  • The password contains the user's account name or parts of their display name, which complexity rules reject.
  • A banned-password list or third-party password filter blocks common words or patterns inside an otherwise complex password.

Why it matters

Users who can't change an expiring or compromised password either get locked out or keep using a password that should be retired. After a phishing incident, being unable to rotate credentials quickly leaves the account exposed. The vague error also generates repeat help desk calls and encourages staff to pick predictable passwords just to get through.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a strong password get rejected?

Strength isn't the only rule. Age limits, history, name matching and banned-word lists can all reject a password that looks complex enough.

Does this apply to everyone or just this user?

It may be a domain-wide rule or a stricter policy targeting a specific group. We identify exactly which policy applies to the account.
