What you’re seeing
- Clients click a shared link and are asked to sign in with a Microsoft account they don't have.
- An error says the link has been disabled, or that sharing with external users is not allowed.
- Guests receive the one-time verification code email late or never.
- A partner can open the link but sees "Access denied" once inside the folder.
- Links that worked last month have suddenly stopped working.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- External sharing is turned off, or set more restrictively, at the tenant or individual site level.
- The link type was set to people in your organization only, so anyone outside is blocked.
- A domain allow-list or block-list excludes the guest's email domain.
- The guest's invitation was redeemed with a different email address than the one the link was shared to.
- Anyone-links were configured to expire automatically, and the link has passed its expiration date.
- A Conditional Access or guest-access policy requires MFA or device conditions the outside user cannot meet.
Why it matters
Sharing files with clients, accountants, attorneys and vendors is a daily task for most small businesses. Broken links delay approvals, signatures and deliveries, and make the business look disorganized to customers. Staff then fall back to email attachments or personal file-sharing services, losing version control and leaving copies of confidential documents scattered outside company control.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
Does the client need to buy a Microsoft license?
No. Guests can access shared content without a paid license; depending on settings they verify with a code or their existing account.
Will turning sharing back on expose our internal sites?
It doesn't have to. Sharing can be allowed only on specific sites or to specific domains, and we review those settings with you so internal-only content stays internal.
