SharePoint & File Migration

OneDrive or SharePoint says 'you can't sync using this device'

SharePoint shows a banner saying you can't download, print or sync from this device, and the Sync button doesn't work. The device isn't recognized as compliant by your organization's policies.

What you’re seeing

  • A yellow banner in SharePoint saying you can't download, print or sync files from this device.
  • The Sync button in the document library is greyed out or does nothing when clicked.
  • Files open only in the browser, and Download is missing from the menu.
  • The same user can sync normally from their office laptop but not from a home PC or personal Mac.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • A Conditional Access policy limits unmanaged devices to browser-only access in SharePoint and OneDrive.
  • The computer is not joined or registered to Microsoft Entra ID, so the tenant treats it as unmanaged.
  • The device is enrolled in Intune but currently marked non-compliant, for example because of missing updates or disabled encryption.
  • OneDrive sync is restricted to computers joined to specific domains, and this machine is not on the list.
  • The user signed into the browser with a different profile or account than the one tied to the managed device.

Why it matters

This restriction is usually a deliberate security control, but when it catches the wrong machines it stalls real work. Staff who rely on offline files, large CAD or video projects, or desktop Office features end up stuck in the browser. People then look for workarounds such as personal cloud storage or USB drives, which defeats the very data protection the policy was meant to provide.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a bug or did someone set this up on purpose?

It is almost always a policy your organization or a previous IT provider configured. The question is whether the device should qualify as trusted and is being misjudged, or whether the policy itself needs adjusting.

Will loosening it put our files at risk?

Not if it is done carefully. We review the policy and the device's compliance status first, then make the narrowest change that lets legitimate devices sync while keeping unmanaged ones in browser-only mode.

Why can I still see the files in the browser?

Browser-only access is the intended fallback for unmanaged devices. You can view and often edit online, but nothing gets copied to the local disk.
