Office says it's unlicensed or can't verify your license

Word, Excel and Outlook show an unlicensed product banner or 'we couldn't verify your license' and switch to reduced functionality.

What you’re seeing

  • A banner reads "Unlicensed Product" or says Office couldn't verify your license.
  • Editing is disabled and documents open in read-only, reduced functionality mode.
  • The account page in Word or Excel lists a different email address from the one that holds the license.
  • It began after a password change, a new laptop setup or a change to your subscription.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • The user's Microsoft 365 license was removed, swapped for a plan without desktop apps, or the subscription lapsed.
  • Office is signed in with a personal Microsoft account or another work account that has no Office license.
  • The user has reached the limit on how many devices can have Office activated at the same time.
  • Leftover licensing from an older perpetual or volume-licensed Office edition conflicts with the subscription version.
  • Proxy, firewall or web filtering rules stop Office from reaching Microsoft's licensing service for its periodic check.
  • The local license cache is damaged or the system clock is wrong, making a valid license appear expired.

Why it matters

In reduced functionality mode staff can view documents but not edit or save them, which stalls contracts, spreadsheets and proposals mid-task. When the trigger is a billing or plan change, every user on that plan can be hit on the same morning. Some people work around it with personal accounts or free alternatives, scattering company files outside managed storage and creating data protection and compliance gaps.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Will users lose the documents they were working on?

No. Files are not deleted; Office simply blocks editing until the license is verified. Anything already saved remains intact.

Do we need to buy more licenses?

Not necessarily. Many cases come from sign-in mix-ups or leftover old installs. If a license shortfall is the cause, we explain exactly how many you need and why.
