Mac password out of sync with the company network

After a password change, a Mac's login password, keychain and network password no longer match and the user keeps getting prompts.

What you’re seeing

  • After a password change, the Mac still accepts only the old password at the login screen.
  • Constant prompts to update the login keychain, or keychain errors at startup.
  • Wi-Fi, email or file shares repeatedly ask for the new password.
  • A message saying the network account is unavailable or the password couldn't be synced.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • The Mac uses a local or mobile account that only updates its password when it can reach a domain controller or identity provider at the right moment.
  • The password was changed on another device or online while the Mac was away from the network.
  • The login keychain is still locked with the old password, so saved credentials can't be unlocked.
  • Platform SSO or the Kerberos SSO extension is partially configured and falls out of sync with Entra ID or Active Directory.
  • Saved credentials for Wi-Fi, mail or file shares still hold the previous password.

Why it matters

A Mac with mismatched passwords slows its user down all day with prompts, failed connections and keychain errors. Repeated attempts with the old password can lock the account across every system, stopping the person from working on any device. Frustrated users may write passwords down or borrow a colleague's login, eroding security. Handled poorly, resetting the keychain can wipe out saved passwords and certificates the user relies on.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Will the user lose saved passwords?

Not if the keychain is handled correctly. When the old password is known, saved items can usually be kept, and we confirm the situation before touching anything.

Will this keep happening every time passwords change?

It can, depending on how your Macs are tied to your directory. We explain in plain English why it happened and what would prevent it.
