What you’re seeing
- The Mac asks for a FileVault recovery key at startup or after several failed password attempts.
- The user forgot their password, and the reset option asks for the recovery key.
- Nobody knows whether the key was saved to iCloud, printed, or stored in a device management system.
- An employee left, and the Mac they used is locked with FileVault.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- FileVault was turned on by the user during setup and the recovery key was never escrowed with the company.
- The Mac was never enrolled in device management, so no copy of the key was collected.
- The recovery key was shown on screen once and never saved anywhere.
- Key recovery was tied to a personal Apple Account that belongs to someone who has since left.
- A macOS update or login change triggered a recovery prompt the user had never encountered before.
Why it matters
FileVault encryption is doing its job: without the password or recovery key, the data on the Mac is unreadable to anyone, including you. If neither can be found, the only option may be to erase the Mac, losing any files not backed up elsewhere. For a departing employee's machine, that could mean losing client work and records. On the positive side, encryption means a lost or stolen Mac doesn't expose data, but the business needs a reliable way to hold keys.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
Can Apple unlock the Mac for us?
Apple can't bypass FileVault. If the key was escrowed with an Apple Account or a management system, it can be retrieved there; otherwise the encryption cannot be broken.
Where might the key be stored?
Common places include a device management console, the user's Apple Account, a printed sheet or a password manager. An engineer can help search all the likely locations.
If we have to erase it, is the data gone?
Data that wasn't synced or backed up elsewhere would be lost. We look at OneDrive, iCloud and your backup systems first so you know what can be recovered.
