FSLogix profile won't load — users get a temporary profile

Users on Azure Virtual Desktop or Remote Desktop servers log in to a blank, temporary profile and lose their desktop and settings. The FSLogix profile container failed to attach.

What you’re seeing

  • Users sign in to a blank desktop with default wallpaper and none of their files, shortcuts or settings.
  • Windows reports that you've been signed in with a temporary profile.
  • Outlook sets itself up from scratch and Teams asks for sign-in every session.
  • Anything saved during the session is gone at the next sign-in.
  • FSLogix logs report that the profile container couldn't be attached or is in use.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • The file share holding the profile containers is unreachable or full, or the session host can't authenticate to it.
  • Share or NTFS permissions don't allow users to create or open their own profile disk.
  • The user's profile disk is still locked by an earlier session that didn't close cleanly on another host.
  • The profile container is corrupt or has reached its maximum size, so it can't be mounted.
  • A local profile for the user already exists on the session host, and FSLogix is configured not to replace it.
  • Identity-based access to an Azure Files storage account stopped working after a password, key or domain change.

Why it matters

On shared desktop environments, the profile container is everything a user expects to see: their desktop, Outlook cache, browser data and app settings. A temporary profile makes the session nearly useless, and any work saved to it disappears at sign-out, so people lose files without realizing it. When the cause is the storage share, every user on every session host can be affected at once, turning a single fault into an office-wide outage.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Have the user's files and settings been lost?

Usually not. The profile container is typically still on the file share and simply failed to attach. The real risk is work saved into the temporary profile, which is discarded at sign-out.

Does this affect everyone on the server or just one person?

It depends on the cause. A locked or corrupt disk affects one user, while a storage or permissions problem can hit everyone. The engineer confirms which before changing anything.
