What you’re seeing
- The Entra Connect setup wizard reports that it cannot validate the provided credentials.
- Sync runs but certain users or groups show permission-issue or access-denied errors on export or import.
- Password writeback or hybrid features fail with access errors.
- The wizard accepts the credentials on one server but rejects them on another.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- The on-premises service account lacks the directory permissions needed to read or write the affected objects.
- Protected accounts or groups such as domain admins have inheritance disabled, blocking the sync account's permissions on them.
- The cloud admin account used in the wizard requires MFA or is blocked by Conditional Access during setup.
- The server cannot reach a domain controller or Microsoft endpoints because of DNS, firewall or TLS settings.
- The credentials were entered in the wrong format or for a different forest than the one being configured.
Why it matters
Partial access-denied errors mean some users silently stop syncing: their password resets, title changes or group updates never reach Microsoft 365. Setup failures can block a cloud migration or hybrid project. Granting the sync account excessive rights to make errors vanish is a common but risky shortcut, because that account becomes a high-value target.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
Should we just give the sync account domain admin rights?
We advise against it. Entra Connect needs specific, limited permissions, and a domain-admin sync account is a security risk. We grant only what is required.
Which users are affected by the access-denied errors?
Typically privileged or specially protected accounts. We identify each affected object and explain why it is failing before changing permissions.
