USB devices keep disconnecting

Mice, keyboards, headsets or drives drop out and reconnect with the Windows chime.

What you’re seeing

  • Mice, keyboards or headsets stop responding for a moment, accompanied by the Windows disconnect and reconnect sounds.
  • External drives eject themselves mid-copy with errors such as "device not ready" or "the device is no longer connected."
  • Devices plugged into a dock or USB hub drop out while those plugged directly into the PC stay connected.
  • Headsets cut out during Teams or Zoom calls, forcing the user to rejoin.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • Windows power management is suspending USB ports to save energy and not waking them reliably.
  • A docking station or unpowered hub cannot supply enough power to everything connected to it.
  • Dock firmware or USB controller drivers are out of date or conflicting after a Windows update.
  • A worn cable or a loose port is losing contact when the device or desk is moved.
  • Wireless receivers for mice and keyboards are getting interference from USB 3 ports or devices right next to them.
  • An external drive is drawing more power than the port can provide, causing it to reset under load.

Why it matters

USB dropouts break concentration dozens of times a day and can do real damage when they hit at the wrong moment. A headset disconnecting during a client call, a scanner dropping in the middle of a batch or a keyboard freezing during data entry all slow the business down. External drives that disconnect while writing can corrupt files or the whole drive, which is especially serious when that drive is being used as a backup.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is the drive that keeps disconnecting going to lose our files?

Interrupted writes can corrupt files or the drive's file system, so it is worth resolving quickly. If that drive holds your only backup, treat it as unreliable until the cause is confirmed.

Do we need to replace our docking stations?

Often not. Firmware, drivers and power settings account for many dock-related dropouts. We identify whether the dock, the device or the PC is at fault before recommending new hardware.
