PC Hardware & Performance

PC turns on but there's no display

Fans spin and lights come on, but the monitor stays black and the PC never reaches Windows.

What you’re seeing

  • Power light on, fans spinning, keyboard lights active, but the monitor shows "No signal" or stays completely black.
  • The computer beeps in a pattern at startup, or a light on the motherboard or case blinks in a sequence.
  • No manufacturer logo appears, and the PC never reaches the Windows sign-in screen.
  • The problem began after a power outage, a move, or new hardware being installed.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • The monitor is connected to the motherboard's video port while a separate graphics card is installed, so the output is going nowhere.
  • A memory module has come loose or failed, which stops the PC before it can initialize video.
  • The graphics card, or its power connection, has failed.
  • A power supply that is weakening can spin fans while failing to deliver stable power to the motherboard and processor.
  • A failed or interrupted BIOS update, or a corrupted firmware setting, prevents the system from completing its startup checks.
  • The cable, adapter or monitor input selection is faulty, so a working PC simply is not showing its picture.

Why it matters

A desktop that powers on but shows nothing is completely unusable, and the employee assigned to it is effectively idle until it is sorted out. Because the PC never loads Windows, nobody can reach files stored only on that machine, and any software licensed to it is stuck as well. Diagnosing it correctly matters: replacing the wrong part wastes money and time, and a failing power supply can damage other components if it is left in service.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

How can you help remotely if the computer won't show anything?

An engineer guides a person at the desk through observing what the PC is doing, such as beep codes, diagnostic lights and how it behaves with different connections, and interprets those results. That is often enough to identify the failed part or rule out the PC entirely.

Are the files on that computer lost?

Almost never. A no-display fault is usually in memory, graphics or power, not the drive, so the data is typically intact and can be recovered even if the PC itself has to be replaced.
