What you’re seeing
- The battery icon reads "Plugged in, not charging" and the percentage never rises.
- The battery percentage drops during the day even though the charger is connected.
- Windows or the manufacturer's tool warns that the AC adapter is unknown, underpowered or not recognized.
- Charging only works when the cable is held at a certain angle, or only through one USB-C port.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- A battery-care feature from the manufacturer is deliberately holding the charge at a set limit, such as 80 percent, to extend battery life.
- The charger is lower wattage than the laptop needs, a common issue with USB-C chargers and docking stations shared between models.
- The battery has worn out or swollen and the laptop's firmware has stopped charging it for safety.
- The charging port or the adapter's cable is damaged, causing an unreliable connection.
- Outdated BIOS or embedded controller firmware is misreading the battery or the charger.
- The Windows battery driver has become corrupted and reports the wrong charging state.
Why it matters
A laptop that cannot hold a charge stops being portable. Employees end up tethered to an outlet, miss meetings because their machine dies on the way, or lose unsaved work when the battery quietly runs out. Swollen batteries are also a genuine safety issue: they can push up the keyboard or trackpad and, if punctured, overheat. Knowing whether the charger, battery or a setting is responsible avoids buying parts that will not solve the problem.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to keep using the laptop while it isn't charging?
Usually, yes. The exception is a battery that looks swollen, with a bulging case, lifted keyboard or trackpad, or a gap along the seams. In that case, stop using it and keep it away from heat.
Do we need a new battery?
Not always. Charge limits, underpowered USB-C chargers and firmware issues produce the same symptoms, so we check the battery's health report and the adapter before anything is replaced.
