Devices getting a 169.254 address — no network access

169.254.x.x

Computers or phones show an IP address starting with 169.254 and can't reach anything, usually because they never got an address from DHCP.

What you’re seeing

  • The device shows an IP address beginning with 169.254 in its network details.
  • Windows reports "No network access" or "Unidentified network" while the cable or Wi-Fi is connected.
  • Several devices in one area or on one switch are affected at once.
  • Phones on Wi-Fi report that they are connected without internet.
  • The issue appeared after a power outage, a router replacement or a server restart.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • The DHCP server is down, stopped or unreachable, so devices fall back to a self-assigned address.
  • The DHCP scope ran out of available addresses for that network.
  • A switch, access point or VLAN configuration change separated devices from the DHCP server.
  • A DHCP relay on the router or core switch is missing or pointing to the wrong server.
  • A faulty cable, switch port or network adapter prevents DHCP messages from getting through.

Why it matters

A 169.254 address means a device is cut off from almost everything: internet, printers, file shares and cloud apps. When it affects a whole floor or office, work stops. Point-of-sale terminals, VoIP phones and security cameras are often affected along with computers, so the impact can reach customers and physical security as well as staff. Repeated short outages also wear down confidence in the network and lead people to plug in unauthorized equipment.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is it one device or the whole network?

If only one device has the address, the cause is usually local to it. If many do, a central service such as DHCP or a switch is more likely.

Will rebooting the router fix it for good?

It may help temporarily, but the problem tends to return unless the underlying cause is addressed. We confirm the cause before changing anything.
