What you’re seeing
- A folder on the shared drive has vanished, and it isn't in anyone's Recycle Bin.
- Someone saved over a spreadsheet or document and the earlier version is needed.
- The Previous Versions tab on the share is empty or doesn't go back far enough.
- Files were moved or renamed by mistake and nobody knows where they ended up.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- Files deleted from a network share bypass the user's local Recycle Bin, so they cannot be pulled back the usual way.
- Shadow copies on the file server were never turned on, or their storage limit is so small that older versions are already gone.
- A sync tool or script mirrored a deletion from one location to another.
- A user dragged a folder into another directory by accident, so it looks missing rather than deleted.
- The nightly backup ran after the mistake was made, so only the most recent restore points hold the damaged version.
Why it matters
Losing a shared folder, or the right version of a key file, can stop a project, a payroll run or a client deliverable in its tracks. Staff waste hours recreating work, and some information, such as signed forms, client correspondence or financial records, may not be recreatable at all. The longer a deletion goes unnoticed, the more restore points roll over, so quick action matters. Repeated incidents also point to gaps in permissions or backup coverage that leave the business exposed to larger losses.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a time limit on getting the file back?
In practice, yes. Shadow copies and backups keep a fixed number of versions and older ones are replaced over time, so the sooner a restore is attempted, the better the odds.
Will restoring overwrite anyone's current work?
It doesn't have to. Files can be restored to a separate location so the current and earlier versions can be compared before anything is replaced.
Can we find out who deleted it?
Only if file auditing was turned on before it happened. If it wasn't, we can still explain what we found and whether auditing would help going forward.
