PC Hardware & Performance

Added RAM not showing up or causing crashes

New memory isn't recognized, shows less than expected, or the PC crashes after the upgrade.

What you’re seeing

  • Windows still reports the old amount of memory after new RAM was installed.
  • Total memory looks right, but the "usable" figure is much lower than the installed amount.
  • The PC beeps, shows a blank screen or restarts repeatedly after the upgrade.
  • Blue screens, application crashes or freezes started soon after the new memory went in.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • The new modules are not fully seated, or they were installed in slots that the motherboard does not pair correctly.
  • The memory type, speed or voltage does not match what the motherboard or the existing modules support.
  • Mixing modules of different sizes, brands or timings has produced an unstable combination.
  • A portion of memory is reserved for integrated graphics or hardware, which lowers the usable amount Windows shows.
  • The motherboard or processor has a maximum supported memory capacity lower than what was installed.
  • One of the new modules is defective.

Why it matters

A memory upgrade is supposed to make an aging PC usable again, so when it goes wrong the business ends up worse off than before: a machine that crashes more instead of running faster. Unstable memory is particularly dangerous because it can corrupt files as they are saved without any obvious warning. Getting the compatibility right protects the investment and avoids having an employee work on a machine that randomly loses their work.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Did we buy the wrong memory?

Possibly, but not always. Seating, slot placement and BIOS settings cause many of these problems. We confirm the exact memory the PC supports before suggesting an exchange.

Could the new RAM damage our files?

Unstable memory can corrupt data being written, so it is wise to limit important work on that PC until the memory is confirmed stable.
