What you’re seeing
- Typing in the taskbar search box returns no results or a blank panel.
- Search can't find files that are clearly in Documents or on the desktop.
- Installed apps don't appear in search results, even when typing their exact name.
- Searching email in classic Outlook also returns nothing or only partial results.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- The Windows Search service is stopped, disabled or repeatedly crashing.
- The search index is corrupt or stuck rebuilding, so it never completes.
- Indexed locations were changed, leaving out the folders where users actually keep files.
- A Windows update left the search interface component in a broken state for the user.
- Policies that restrict web or cloud results were applied in a way that also blocks local results.
Why it matters
Search is how many people find their files, emails and apps, so when it breaks they waste minutes on every task, browsing folder trees or asking colleagues for copies. Duplicated files then start to appear, creating version confusion. Because classic Outlook relies on the same index for cached mailboxes, finding a client email or invoice can become slow or impossible, delaying responses to customers.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
Are our files missing?
No. Search failing means Windows can't find the files, not that they're gone. They're still where they were saved.
Why has Outlook search stopped working too?
Classic Outlook uses the Windows search index to find mail stored on the PC. When the index breaks, both Windows and Outlook searches are affected.
