What you’re seeing
- A message says 'We can't sign in to your account' right after logging on.
- A notification states the user has been signed in with a temporary profile.
- The desktop is blank, with default wallpaper, and documents, shortcuts and browser favorites appear to be gone.
- Any changes made during the session disappear after signing out.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- The profile's entry in the registry was marked as a backup copy after a failed logon, so Windows no longer loads the original.
- The user's registry hive file inside the profile is corrupt or locked.
- Antivirus or backup software held the profile files open at sign-in, blocking Windows from loading them.
- The system drive was full, so Windows couldn't write to the profile during logon.
- A roaming profile or FSLogix container on a server wasn't reachable when the user signed in.
- Permissions on the profile folder were changed, denying the user access to their own data.
Why it matters
A user in a temporary profile can't see their files, email setup or saved settings, so they're effectively unable to work. Worse, anything they save to the desktop or Documents during that session is discarded at sign-out, which can mean lost work if they carry on regardless. Hasty attempts to 'fix' it, such as deleting the profile, can permanently destroy data that was perfectly recoverable.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
Are the user's files gone?
Almost never. The original profile folder usually still exists; Windows just isn't loading it. We confirm the data is intact before changing anything.
Is it safe for them to keep working until it's fixed?
Files saved to the desktop or Documents in a temporary profile are discarded at sign-out, so anything stored there in the meantime is at risk.
Can this be repaired remotely?
Yes, in most cases. An engineer can usually restore the original profile over a secure remote session.
