Email & Exchange Server

SMTP error 454 4.7.0 when sending mail to outside organizations

454 4.7.0

Internal mail works, but mail to certain outside organizations fails with 454 4.7.0. It often starts right after a certificate change on the mail server.

What you’re seeing

  • Outbound messages to some organizations queue with a 454 4.7.0 error, such as TLS not available or a temporary authentication failure.
  • Internal email and mail to most other domains keep working.
  • Messages to affected recipients retry repeatedly and eventually bounce.
  • The problem started right after the mail server's certificate was renewed or replaced.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • The new certificate was installed but not assigned to the SMTP service, so Exchange cannot complete a secure session when a partner insists on encryption.
  • A send connector is configured to present a certificate by name, and that name or issuer no longer matches any certificate on the server.
  • The server cannot read the private key of the new certificate because of key permissions or how the certificate was imported.
  • A partner requires mutually authenticated TLS and expects a certificate name that your new certificate does not contain.
  • The old certificate was removed while connectors or partner settings still referenced it.

Why it matters

The organizations that enforce TLS are often the ones that matter most: banks, insurers, government agencies, healthcare providers and large customers. When mail to them fails, regulated correspondence, payment information and contract documents stop moving, sometimes with legal or financial deadlines attached. Because the failures only affect certain recipients and internal mail looks fine, the issue can go unnoticed for days until someone asks why a critical reply never came.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Why only some organizations and not all of them?

Many mail servers fall back to sending without encryption if TLS fails. Organizations that require encryption refuse to do that, so they are the ones whose mail queues or bounces.

Is our outbound mail being sent unencrypted to everyone else?

Possibly, if TLS is failing across the board. Our engineer checks how mail is actually leaving the server and includes that in the plain-English summary.
