What you’re seeing
- Entra ID or Microsoft 365 sign-in logs show successful logins from countries where nobody on the team has been.
- Alerts about "impossible travel," "atypical travel" or "unfamiliar sign-in properties" for a user.
- The user receives MFA prompts they did not trigger, or reports a password reset they did not request.
- Sign-ins come from hosting providers or VPN services rather than residential or office internet connections.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- The user's password was stolen through phishing, malware or reuse from a breached website.
- A session token was captured from the user's browser, letting an attacker sign in without needing the password or MFA.
- Legacy authentication protocols remain enabled and allow password-only sign-ins that skip MFA.
- The account has no MFA, or MFA can be approved with a simple push that the user accepted by mistake.
- Benign explanations also exist, such as a personal VPN, a mobile carrier routing through another country, or a cloud app signing in on the user's behalf.
Why it matters
A foreign sign-in that succeeded means someone may have full access to that user's email, files and Teams chats right now. Attackers commonly use this access to set up payment fraud, steal client data or move on to other accounts, including administrators. Treating it as a false alarm without verifying is risky, while overreacting without understanding the source can disrupt legitimate work. Either way, a timely, evidence-based answer is what protects the business.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
Could this be a false alarm?
Sometimes. VPNs, mobile networks and cloud services can make legitimate sign-ins look foreign. We review the details of each sign-in to tell genuine compromise from a harmless explanation before acting.
Can we block sign-ins from other countries entirely?
Location-based Conditional Access is possible with the right Microsoft licensing, and it reduces risk, but it is not a complete defense because attackers often use local VPN endpoints. We can explain how it fits with stronger protections.
Is the user's computer infected?
Not necessarily. Many account takeovers happen entirely in the cloud. If evidence points to malware stealing passwords or tokens, the computer is examined as part of the response.
