Public folders missing or inaccessible after a migration

After a mail migration, users can't see public folders, get permission errors opening them, or find content missing.

What you’re seeing

  • The Public Folders section is missing from Outlook entirely after the move.
  • Users can see the folder list but get permission errors when opening specific folders.
  • Some folders open but are empty or contain only older items.
  • Mail-enabled public folders stopped receiving messages sent to their addresses.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • Folder-level permissions did not carry over in the migration, or they reference accounts that no longer exist.
  • The public folder mailboxes were created, but users have not been pointed to them as their default public folder location.
  • The content migration did not complete, or the final synchronization step was never run.
  • Mail-enabled public folders lost their email addresses or were not enabled for mail in the new environment.
  • Users on a hybrid setup are still being directed to public folders on the old server.

Why it matters

Many long-established businesses keep shared contacts, project archives, team calendars or intake mailboxes in public folders. When they disappear after a migration, teams lose access to information they use every day and may assume data has been lost. Mail-enabled folders that stop receiving messages mean inquiries or orders go missing, and the old system often can't simply be switched back on.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Has our public folder data been lost?

Usually not. The data is generally either in the new environment with the wrong permissions, or still on the source system. We confirm where it is before changing anything.

Should we keep using public folders at all?

They are still supported, but shared mailboxes or Microsoft 365 groups can be a better fit for some uses. Our engineer can explain the options once access is restored.
