What you’re seeing
- The Outlook status bar shows 'Disconnected', 'Trying to connect' or 'Updating this folder' and never changes.
- New mail never appears in Outlook, but the same messages are visible in Outlook on the web.
- Sent messages sit in the Outbox indefinitely.
- Outlook repeatedly asks for a password, or shows 'Need password' in the status bar.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- The Outlook profile or its local cache file has become corrupt and can no longer sync with the server.
- Saved credentials on the PC are outdated after a password change, so Outlook can't complete sign-in.
- A VPN, proxy, firewall or security product is interfering with Outlook's connection to the mail service.
- Outlook is set to work offline, or a sync issue is stuck on a particular folder.
- An outdated Office build or a faulty add-in is preventing Outlook from completing its connection.
Why it matters
When Outlook silently stops syncing, staff believe they are caught up when they are not. Customer replies go unseen, meeting changes are missed and messages that appear sent are actually stuck in the Outbox. Because webmail works, the problem is often dismissed as minor, yet the affected person may be working from stale information for days. If it hits several machines at once, it can point to a network or security product change affecting the whole office.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
Is anyone's mail lost while Outlook is disconnected?
No. Mail continues to arrive in the mailbox on the server, and it appears in Outlook once the connection is restored. Messages in the Outbox are held until they can be sent.
Why does webmail work when Outlook doesn't?
Webmail talks to the server directly through the browser, while Outlook depends on a local profile, saved sign-ins and its own sync process. The fault is usually somewhere in that local setup.
