What you’re seeing
- Messages to outside domains sit in the queue with a last error of 451 4.4.0 DNS query failed.
- Email between internal users is delivered instantly.
- Senders receive delayed delivery notices for external recipients.
- Other services on the server may also struggle to reach websites by name.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- The Exchange server's DNS settings point to internal servers that cannot resolve external names, often because forwarders were removed or no longer respond.
- A send connector is configured to use a specific external DNS server that is unreachable or blocking queries.
- A firewall change is blocking DNS traffic from the server or from the internal DNS servers to the internet.
- Exchange is set to use a network adapter or DNS configuration that no longer matches the server's actual network setup.
- Only the recipient's domain has a broken or missing MX record, which causes the same error for that single destination.
Why it matters
If Exchange cannot look up where to send mail, nothing leaves your organization. Customers, suppliers and partners stop hearing from you while staff believe their emails have been sent. Messages retry quietly in the background and eventually expire, so a problem that runs over a weekend can mean a large batch of bounced mail on Monday. DNS problems also tend to affect other systems on the network, so the same fault may be degrading updates, licensing checks or security tools.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
Why does internal mail still work?
Internal delivery doesn't need to find outside mail servers, so it does not rely on external DNS lookups. Only mail heading outside the organization depends on that step.
Is the problem with our email or our internet?
Usually it is the name lookup service rather than the internet connection itself. Our engineer pins down which part of DNS is failing and confirms the cause before changing anything.
