What you’re seeing
- A message saying the user or group can't be edited because it is synced from your on-premises directory.
- Name, email address and other fields are grayed out in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Changes made through other cloud tools are reversed after the next sync.
- Staff ask for a simple address change and nobody is sure where to make it.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- Directory synchronization makes on-premises Active Directory the source of authority for synced accounts, so the cloud copy is read-only for those attributes.
- The last on-premises Exchange server was removed, leaving no supported tool to manage email attributes that still sync from Active Directory.
- The object was matched to an existing cloud account during setup, so the cloud account came under the control of sync.
- A sync rule or filter controls the attribute in question, and edits in Active Directory are not reaching the cloud as expected.
Why it matters
Simple requests such as a name change after marriage, a new alias, or a role-based address can take days when nobody knows where changes must be made. Leavers may stay visible in address books, and urgent fixes are delayed. Workarounds like editing directory attributes by hand can introduce errors that sync to the cloud and break sign-in or mail delivery for the account, and repeated attempts to break the link between the two directories can create duplicate users and lost mailboxes.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
Can we stop syncing and manage everything in the cloud?
It is possible, but it is a significant change that affects sign-in, passwords and how accounts are managed. Our engineer can explain the options and trade-offs in plain English before you decide.
Will fixing one account affect anyone else?
Not if it is done carefully. Our engineer confirms how that account is synced before changing anything, so changes are limited to the object you asked about.
