What you’re seeing
- Senders receive a notice with code 4.4.7 saying the message expired and was never delivered.
- Earlier delay notifications said the server was still trying to deliver the message.
- The failure affects one particular outside domain, or every outbound message, depending on the cause.
- Mail queues on your server or service show messages piling up with retry errors.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- The recipient's mail server was offline, refusing connections or timing out for longer than the retry window.
- DNS lookups for the destination domain fail or return outdated mail server records.
- A firewall or ISP is blocking outbound connections on the standard mail port from your server.
- The receiving server is temporarily rejecting your mail due to greylisting, rate limits or reputation concerns.
- A send connector or smart host setting points to a relay that no longer exists or no longer accepts your mail.
Why it matters
Expired messages are particularly damaging because senders believe they were delivered for a day or more before learning otherwise. Time-sensitive mail such as bids, filings and payment confirmations can miss its deadline. If the cause is on your side, every message to the outside world may be affected; if it is on the recipient's side, an important customer or partner can be unreachable without you realizing why.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
Is the problem with us or with the recipient?
It can be either. Message trace and queue data usually show whether the failures are limited to one destination or affect everything, which tells us where to look.
Will the expired messages be resent automatically?
No. Once a message expires it is dropped, so important messages need to be sent again after the underlying problem is resolved.
