Mapped network drives show a red X or don't reconnect

Mapped drives show a red X after login or reboot and only work after clicking into them — or not at all.

What you’re seeing

  • Mapped drives show a red X in File Explorer after logging on or restarting.
  • A notification says Windows could not reconnect all network drives.
  • Double-clicking the drive makes it work, but programs that open files directly from it fail first.
  • Drives that worked in the office stay disconnected when working remotely over VPN.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • Windows tries to reconnect drives before the network connection is fully up, especially with fast startup or on Wi-Fi.
  • The VPN connects after logon, so the file server isn't reachable when Windows restores the drives.
  • Stored credentials for the drive have expired or no longer match the current password.
  • Drives were mapped under an elevated session, so they don't appear for the standard user session, or vice versa.
  • The file server was renamed, moved or replaced, and the old path in the mapping no longer resolves.

Why it matters

Shared drives often hold the company's working files: client folders, accounting data, templates and scans. When they don't reconnect, applications that depend on a drive letter, such as accounting or practice management software, can throw errors or open with missing data. Staff lose time at the start of each day, and some save files locally instead, leaving important documents outside the backup and out of reach of colleagues.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is our file server down?

Usually not. If the drive opens after clicking into it, the server is fine and the issue is with how and when the PC reconnects.

Does this affect everyone in the office?

It can, if the cause is a shared policy or logon script. If only one person sees it, the cause is more likely on their PC or account.
