Email & Exchange Server

Exchange stopped accepting mail because the server disk filled up

Mail suddenly stops flowing in and out, and scanners can't send. The Exchange server's system drive is full or nearly full, often from logging that was left turned up or from a large mailbox move. Exchange protects itself by refusing new mail until space is freed.

What you’re seeing

  • External senders get a 452 4.3.1 insufficient system resources response or delayed-delivery notices.
  • Copiers and scanners suddenly fail to send scans by email.
  • Event log warnings about back pressure and high resource use on the Exchange server.
  • The server's system drive shows almost no free space.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • Protocol or diagnostic logging was raised for troubleshooting and never turned back down, so log files kept growing.
  • IIS and Exchange diagnostic logs have been accumulating for years with no cleanup in place.
  • Database transaction logs are piling up because Exchange-aware backups are failing, and only a successful backup lets Exchange clear them.
  • A large mailbox move or migration batch generated far more transaction log data than the drive could hold.
  • The transport queue database sits on the system drive and grew during a backlog.

Why it matters

Exchange deliberately refuses new mail when disk space runs low, so inbound and outbound email stop together. Orders, support requests and invoices sit with the sender, and devices that send alerts or scans by email fail silently. If the drive fills completely, databases can dismount and Windows itself becomes unstable, turning a mail outage into a server outage. Failed backups are often part of the story, which means your recovery position may have been weaker than you thought for some time.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Can we just delete some big files to get mail moving?

Be careful. Some large files look safe but are not; removing Exchange transaction logs by hand, for example, can leave a database unable to mount. Our engineers identify what is safe to clear and confirm before removing anything.

Will the mail that was refused still arrive?

Most of it, yes. Sending servers treat this as a temporary condition and retry for a period, so mail generally arrives once Exchange is accepting again.

Does this mean our backups aren't working?

Not always, but it is common. If transaction logs are behind the space problem, we tell you in the summary so backups can be reviewed.
