What you’re seeing
- The Database Availability Group reports its file share witness as failed, offline or unreachable.
- Cluster events warn that the witness resource could not be brought online.
- Mailbox databases are all mounted and users notice nothing.
- Monitoring raises redundancy or quorum warnings that never seem to clear.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- The server hosting the witness share was rebooted, renamed, retired or replaced.
- Permissions on the witness share or folder no longer allow the cluster to write to it.
- A firewall change blocks file sharing traffic between the DAG members and the witness server.
- The witness folder was deleted during a cleanup by someone who did not know what it was for.
- The cluster's computer account cannot authenticate to the witness server, often after an Active Directory change.
Why it matters
The witness acts as a tie-breaker that lets the DAG keep databases online when a server or network link fails. Without it, a two-server or even-numbered DAG can lose quorum after a single further failure and dismount every database it holds. Because nothing looks wrong to users, a failed witness is easy to ignore until the day it is needed, and that is usually during an already stressful outage, patching window or power event.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
If everything works today, why does this matter?
The witness only matters when something else goes wrong. Without it, a single server reboot or network blip that would normally be survived can take mailbox databases offline.
Does fixing it require downtime?
Usually not. Restoring the witness is normally done with databases online and users unaffected. Our engineer confirms the cause and the plan with you before changing anything.
