PowerShell & Scripting Errors

Can't install the NuGet provider or modules from the PowerShell Gallery

Install-Module fails because the NuGet provider won't install or the PowerShell Gallery can't be reached. Older TLS settings or a proxy are the usual reasons.

What you’re seeing

  • A prompt that the NuGet provider is required, followed by a failure to download it.
  • Messages such as "unable to resolve package source" or "no match was found for the specified search criteria" for a module that clearly exists.
  • Warnings that the PowerShell Gallery repository is unavailable or cannot be reached.
  • Module installs work from home or on a newer machine but fail on office servers.
  • The failure appears on older Windows Server builds while recent workstations install modules without trouble.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • Windows PowerShell 5.1 on older systems defaults to outdated TLS versions, while the PowerShell Gallery now requires TLS 1.2 or later.
  • A corporate proxy requires authentication, and PowerShell's package tools are not passing credentials through it.
  • A firewall or web filter blocks the Gallery's download addresses or the content delivery network behind them.
  • The PowerShellGet and PackageManagement modules on the machine are very old versions with known bugs.
  • SSL inspection on the firewall replaces the Gallery's certificate with one the server does not trust.

Why it matters

When modules cannot be installed, admins lose access to the tools needed for Microsoft 365 management, Exchange administration, security reporting and patch automation. Work stalls, or people resort to copying module folders between machines by hand, which leaves unvetted and outdated code on servers. The underlying cause, often weak TLS defaults on older systems, can also affect other applications that talk to modern cloud services, so it is worth resolving properly.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is our server too old to use the PowerShell Gallery?

Usually not. Most supported Windows Server versions can reach the Gallery once their security protocols and package tools are brought up to date.

Could the same issue affect other software?

Yes. Weak TLS defaults can break other connections to modern cloud services. We confirm the cause before changing anything so related applications benefit as well.
