Can't install the Exchange Online PowerShell module (PackageManagement conflict)

Installing the Exchange Online management module fails with a PackageManagement or module conflict error, so you can't connect to Exchange Online from PowerShell.

What you’re seeing

  • An error mentioning PackageManagement or PowerShellGet when installing the Exchange Online management module.
  • A message that a command is already available in another module, or that a module version conflict was found.
  • Downloads from the PowerShell Gallery fail with a connection or provider error.
  • Administrators cannot connect to Exchange Online from PowerShell on that computer at all.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • Windows PowerShell 5.1 ships with very old versions of PackageManagement and PowerShellGet that struggle to install current modules.
  • Several versions of the module, or the older retired one, are installed in different locations and clash with each other.
  • The machine is still negotiating older TLS versions that the PowerShell Gallery no longer accepts.
  • Execution policy, application control or security software blocks the module's scripts from loading.
  • The module is being installed into a system-wide location without administrator rights, so only part of it lands.

Why it matters

Many Exchange Online settings, bulk changes and security investigations can only be done from PowerShell. When the module won't install, administrators cannot respond to incidents such as checking forwarding rules on a compromised mailbox, cannot automate onboarding and offboarding, and cannot run the reports auditors ask for. Projects such as migrations or retention changes stall, and staff waste hours on the same installation errors that show up in countless forum threads without a clear answer.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a problem with our Microsoft 365 tenant?

No. It is an issue on the computer doing the installing, not with your tenant or mailboxes. Nothing in Microsoft 365 needs to change for the module to work.

Do we really need PowerShell to manage Exchange Online?

For day-to-day tasks the admin center is enough, but some settings and most bulk changes and investigations are only available through PowerShell, so it is worth having a working setup.
