What you’re seeing
- The disk size field in the virtual machine's settings is grayed out or locked.
- Hyper-V or VMware reports that the disk can't be resized because it has checkpoints or snapshots.
- Old snapshots, sometimes months old, are listed against the VM.
- The datastore or host volume is filling up faster than anyone expected.
Common causes
Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:
- While a snapshot exists, changes are written to a delta disk chained to the original, and the hypervisor won't resize a disk that is part of a chain.
- Backup software takes a temporary snapshot during each job and occasionally fails to remove it afterwards.
- A snapshot taken before an upgrade or configuration change was never deleted once the work was done.
- Orphaned delta files remain on storage even though the snapshot manager shows no snapshots.
Why it matters
If the VM can't get more disk, whatever runs on it will eventually stop when the space runs out, whether that's a file server, line-of-business application or database. Long-lived snapshots are a problem in their own right: they slow disk performance, keep growing, and can fill a shared datastore, which may pause every VM on it. They are also often mistaken for backups, giving a false sense of protection.
How AskTechGurus fixes it
Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.
Tell us what’s happening
Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.
A certified engineer diagnoses it
A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.
Fixed and verified with you
The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.
Pay only when it’s resolved
Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.
Frequently asked questions
Aren't snapshots a form of backup? Is it safe to remove them?
Snapshots depend on the original disk and are not a substitute for backups. Before merging one, we confirm you have a good backup and that nobody needs to roll back to it.
Will the virtual machine have to be shut down?
Merging and resizing can often happen while the VM runs, but large merges are best done in a quiet period. We agree the timing with you first.
