Browser keeps redirecting or showing pop-ups after cleanup

A PC's browser keeps opening ads, redirects or fake security alerts, and the problem comes back even after it was "cleaned" — a sign of adware, a malicious extension or a hidden scheduled task.

What you’re seeing

  • Pop-ups claiming the PC is infected appear, often with a phone number to call for 'support'.
  • Searches are redirected to an unfamiliar search engine, or the home page keeps changing.
  • Unfamiliar extensions appear in the browser and can't be removed, sometimes with a 'Managed by your organization' notice.
  • Ads and redirects return within days of the PC being cleaned by antivirus or a cleanup tool.

Common causes

Every environment is different, but these are the causes our engineers find most often:

  • A malicious or hijacked browser extension remains installed, sometimes forced on through a browser policy so the user can't remove it.
  • A hidden scheduled task or startup entry reinstalls the adware after each cleanup.
  • The user allowed notifications from a scam site, which then pushes pop-ups even when no web page is open.
  • Browser sync restores the unwanted extension or settings from the user's cloud profile onto the cleaned PC.
  • Proxy or DNS settings were changed to route web traffic through a server controlled by the attacker.

Why it matters

Adware is often the visible symptom of something more serious. Malicious extensions can read pages you visit, capture form entries and steal session cookies, putting email, banking and cloud accounts at risk. Fake security alerts push staff toward tech support scams that end in remote access by criminals or payments to fraudsters. Every return of the problem costs time, and an infection that survives cleanup suggests the PC can't be trusted with sensitive data until the source is found.

How AskTechGurus fixes it

Skip the trial and error. A certified engineer works on your actual system, finds the root cause, and fixes it properly.

Tell us what’s happening

Submit a ticket in about two minutes. Paste the error, describe what changed, and pick your tier. No charge to submit.

A certified engineer diagnoses it

A vetted, US-based systems engineer claims your ticket, usually within minutes during business hours, and investigates over a secure remote session you can watch and end at any time.

Fixed and verified with you

The engineer resolves the root cause and confirms with you that it’s working. You don’t just get a workaround, and you get a plain-English summary of what was wrong.

Pay only when it’s resolved

Fixed price from $99, invoiced only after you approve the fix. If it isn’t resolved, you don’t pay.

Frequently asked questions

Have our passwords been stolen?

Not necessarily, but some adware captures browsing activity, so we treat it seriously. If there's any sign credentials were exposed, we tell you plainly and recommend which ones to change.

Why did it come back after the antivirus cleaned it?

Antivirus often removes the visible pieces but misses the mechanism that reinstalls them, such as a scheduled task, a forced policy or browser sync. Until that is found, the problem keeps returning.
